What is the Working Holiday Scheme?
The purpose of the Scheme is to facilitate cultural and educational exchange between Hong Kong and the participating country with a view to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two places.


What countries have Working Holiday Agreements with Hong Kong?
The countries that Hong Kong has agreement for the Working Holiday Scheme are Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand


Who can apply for a Japanese Working Holiday Visa?
Citizens from Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Republic of Korea and from New Zealand who are aged between 18 and 30 are eligible to apply for this visa. They must have never been on such type of visa to Hong Kong before and must meet the visa requirements.


When should I activate my visa (enter Hong Kong)?
The visa must be activated within 3 months from its issue date.


When should I apply for my visa?
We would advise you to apply within 3 months from your intended entry date in Hong Kong but not later than 1 month because your application will be sent to Hong Kong for approval.


How long will it take for the visa to be granted?
Normally it takes 2 weeks for the visa to be granted from the date the immigration authorities receive your documents and provided that they are OK. Please allow time for postage to and from Hong Kong as well.


How long can I stay in Hong Kong on a Working Holiday Visa?
The working holiday visa allows you to stay up to 12 months from your initial entry date in the country.


Do I have to apply for a Working Holiday Visa in my home country?
Yes, you must apply from your home country and must be originally residing in it.


Why can’t people from countries other than Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand get a Working Holiday Visa to visit Japan?
This is because at present, only the governments of those countries have signed Working Holiday Agreements with Hong Kong. Working Holiday Agreements are concluded bilaterally between separate countries, and it's up to the government of each country to organize Working Holiday Agreements with other governments. If you wish to apply for a Working Holiday Visa to visit a certain country, your own country must have a Working Holiday Agreement with the country in question.


Is it possible to leave Hong Kong and come back during a working holiday?
Yes, it’s possible as long as you return into the country within your visa validity and the circumstances upon which you have acquired your visa remain unchanged.
